Summary

Deschutes County is now accepting applications for our 2018 Law Clerk, this is a summer intern position working in the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office. Under the direction of the Chief Deputy District Attorney, the Summer Law Clerk will assist with all aspects of prosecution, with a focus on misdemeanor prosecution. The Law Clerk will be mentored by the Deputy District Attorney on a case-by-case basis and is expected to appear in court, learn the prosecution philosophy of the office, and have hands-on experience with motions, trials, and investigations.

Compensation

$15.00 per hour for a 40-hour work week. Temporary position, shall not exceed 3 1/2 months. There are no County benefits available with this position. Position available mid-May, 2018.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have completed two years of law school and been admitted to practice law by the Oregon Supreme Court pursuant to the Student Appearance Rule. This certification must be obtained prior to being assigned criminal cases for court appearance purposes. 

Must have knowledge of the following: 

  • Oregon criminal law and procedure, having successfully passed evidence and criminal law classes at law school.
  • Oregon State Bar ethical rules.

Must have ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Accept directions and follow policies and procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

A writing sample may be submitted and should be related to criminal law or procedure. Please attach your sample to the Attachments section of your application profile. Failure to submit a writing sample will not disqualify the applicant. 

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license. The employment offer will be contingent upon an acceptable and verifiable driver's license and driving history, a drug screening, and a thorough employment and criminal history.

Summary

Deschutes County is currently accepting applications for a Trial Assistant II. This position performs difficult and complex legal clerical work requiring a thorough and specialized knowledge of legal terms and formats. Incumbent will provide administrative support for Deputy District Attorneys, including preparing and issuing legal documents, creating and maintaining case files, coordinating restitution and jury instructions, and scheduling hearings.

Compensation

$3,169.81 to $4,343.53 for a 172.67 hour work month. Salary normally starts at the first step. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

 

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of progressively responsible secretarial experience which includes one year providing legal support duties in a law office or a District Attorney's Office.


Preference will be given for:

  • Experience with Oregon Judicial Information Network (OJIN), and certification in Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS).
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Knowledge of cataloging systems.
Must have a demonstrated knowledge of:
  • The legal process, terminology and legal document filing.
  • English grammar and composition, business and legal formats, spelling, basic arithmetic and record-keeping.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency with keyboarding and the operation of general office equipment.
Must have a demonstrated ability to:
  • Understand Oregon Revised Statutes as they pertain to charging instruments.
  • Perform complex clerical, office and team support duties in a legal environment.
  • Create complex affidavits and motions with little assistance.
Necessary Special Requirements

Physical RequirementsMust have the ability to work in an office that is environmentally controlled; possess sufficient hand coordination to perform keyboarding and data entry; arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment. The position is frequently required to sit, walk, stoop, bend, reach, stand, grasp, talk, hear, see, and lift up to 10 pounds.
