Summary

Deschutes County is now accepting applications for our 2018 Law Clerk, this is a summer intern position working in the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office. Under the direction of the Chief Deputy District Attorney, the Summer Law Clerk will assist with all aspects of prosecution, with a focus on misdemeanor prosecution. The Law Clerk will be mentored by the Deputy District Attorney on a case-by-case basis and is expected to appear in court, learn the prosecution philosophy of the office, and have hands-on experience with motions, trials, and investigations.

Compensation

$15.00 per hour for a 40-hour work week. Temporary position, shall not exceed 3 1/2 months. There are no County benefits available with this position. Position available mid-May, 2018.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have completed two years of law school and been admitted to practice law by the Oregon Supreme Court pursuant to the Student Appearance Rule. This certification must be obtained prior to being assigned criminal cases for court appearance purposes. 

Must have knowledge of the following: 

  • Oregon criminal law and procedure, having successfully passed evidence and criminal law classes at law school.
  • Oregon State Bar ethical rules.

Must have ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Accept directions and follow policies and procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

A writing sample may be submitted and should be related to criminal law or procedure. Please attach your sample to the Attachments section of your application profile. Failure to submit a writing sample will not disqualify the applicant. 

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license. The employment offer will be contingent upon an acceptable and verifiable driver's license and driving history, a drug screening, and a thorough employment and criminal history.

Externship Opportunity

Summary

The Extern will assist with all aspects of prosecution, focusing on misdemeanor cases and will be mentored by the Deputy District Attorneys on a case-by-case basis. The Law Student Extern will appear in court and must be admitted through the Student Appearance Rule, they will learn the prosecution philosophy of the office and have hands-on experience with motions, trials, and investigation. The Law Student Extern will be assigned special projects and performs other duties as required.


To be eligible you must be a current law student and eligible through your law school to receive academic credit for this externship.

Administrative Support Technician

 Summary

Deschutes County is currently accepting applications for an Administrative Support Technician (currently classified as a Senior Secretary) in the District Attorney's Office. This position will help support the District Attorney by performing a variety of standardized duties associated with general office assistance. Incumbent will be responsible for reception, answering a multi-line telephone, processing mail, maintaining records, and filing. Position also includes dealing with information that is of a confidential and sensitive nature, composing routine correspondence, and spreadsheets, entering data into an electronic database system, and customer service to the public and County employees.

Compensation

$2,696.05 to $3,688.80 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Salary normally starts on the first step. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This position is available immediately.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent plus one year of secretarial/business school education and two years of progressively responsible secretarial experience.  Additional experience may be substituted for higher education.

Must have advanced keyboarding skills and be proficient working with word processing, spreadsheets and database programs.

Must have a demonstrated ability to:

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Initiate and produce correspondence and documents in standardized formats using Microsoft Office.
  • Work independently as well as in a team setting.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, department heads, and other employees in a pleasant and courteous manner at all times.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Prioritize, organize and carry out assignments and special projects in a timely and professional fashion with minimal supervision.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Computer literacy, and strong typing and computer skills are required.

Physical Requirements:

 Must have the ability to work in an office that is environmentally controlled; possess sufficient hand coordination to perform keyboarding and data entry; arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment.  The position is frequently required to sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, stand, grasp, talk, hear, see, and lift up to 10 pounds.
