Craig Sentenced on Wildlife Crimes in Addition to Other Charges

In what was described as the worst poaching case Trooper Lindberg of the Oregon State Police had seen in his career, Cole Craig was involved in killing and wasting up to 100 elk & deer in both Jefferson & Deschutes County. After a 7 month investigation where a number of animals had been found taken in winter months & in breeding areas illegally, OSP was able to identify the defendant as one of the main perpetrators of these crimes. He was involved in theft of fuel and auto parts from local businesses in addition to theft of firearms from a family member. There were three identifiable acts of poaching in Deschutes County that the defendant was both charged and convicted of; DDA Drew more was responsible for the Deschutes County cases. Defendant Cole had no previous criminal history, however, between both counties he was convicted of 9 counts of Wildlife Crimes, Aggravated Animal Abuse, Aggravated Theft 1, 3 counts of Theft 1, Theft 2, Criminal Mischief 2, and Burglary 2. He will be serving almost 9 months of jail time between the counties that followed his sentencing on January 10 in Deschutes County with 28 months of prison suspended which he will be subject to serve if he does not comply with 36 months of supervised probation, in which he is to complete 700 hours of Community Work Service, comply with mental health and alcohol treatment, and pay restitution for the animals and thefts of over $20,000. All evidence including firearms and wildlife parts were forfeited and the defendant is banned from hunting for life.
