RJ Workshop
Workshop Overview
Expanding Restorative Justice in Oregon is a multi-day workshop focused on the “nuts and bolts” of developing restorative justice programs in Oregon. Sessions will be designed to help practitioners with well-established and in-development programs to effectively develop or enhance their restorative justice initiative. Working sessions will allow participants to articulate barriers and share strategies to overcome them. The workshop will provide an overview of the breadth of RJ programs from traditional RJ circles to diversion using RJ principles.

Workshop sessions will cover topics such as funding, evaluation and data collection, pre-charge vs. post-charge programs, RJ benefits to the community and the criminal justice system, partnership development, volunteer recruitment and training. The workshop will also involve nationally sourced speakers and experts in implementing RJ in many variations.

The 2024 Expanding Restorative Justice in Oregon workshop is funded by the 2021-2023 Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) Restorative Justice Grant Program, and is being hosted by the Deschutes County DA’s Office and the Deschutes County Emerging Adult Program partners (Community Solutions of Central Oregon, Thrive Central Oregon, and Deschutes Defenders).

General Questions

Who should I contact if I have a topic I would like to present on?

If you have a presentation or workshop idea, add it to your workshop application or email EmergingAdult@dcda.us a brief description of your workshop or presentation idea. Workshop sessions will be allocated 2-hours. Presentations will be allocated approximately 1.25 hours.

There will be three breakout sessions during each time period. We anticipate approximately 20 people attending each breakout session.

How do I submit an application to attend?

When can we check into the hotel?

Accepted attendees are encouraged to arrive on Monday, April 15 between 4:00-6:00 PM for Riverhouse Hotel and Workshop Check-in.

A dinner event that includes a guest speaker and fun activities is being arranged for that evening.

Who will receive priority to attend the workshop?

Restorative Justice doesn’t occur in a box, and for communities to successfully implement these types of programs there must be buy-in from across the community and multiple agencies. Applications from individuals who are part of a diverse Oregon-based interagency team will receive priority in the selection process.

How many people can register from a single organization?

Teams with representatives from diverse Oregon-based interagency groups (system partners and community partners) will receive priority attendance. Individuals or teams that submit an application, which only represents a single entity/organization will not receive priority workshop registration.

How many people can register from a single community or county?

Oregon communities may have up to four (4) individuals register for the workshop.

Communities/ counties that have three (3) or four (4) person teams with representatives from diverse interagency groups (system partners and community partners) and involve staff and/or volunteers will receive priority attendance.

Applications from single individuals or teams made up of individuals all from one organization will not receive priority workshop registration.

Can a volunteer be part of our interagency team or do all applicants have to be staff at the organization?

Volunteers can be part of the interagency team; however, a team cannot be made up of entirely volunteer members.

The goal of this workshop is to expand RJ in communities in Oregon and it is important that at least some of the team members be individuals who are able to make decisions for their organizations.

If my organization covers the expenses of additional attendees, is it possible to bring more team members to the workshop?

Our goal is to keep the workshop smaller to support opportunities for deeper conversations and learning.

Several factors will determine if we can open the event up to more participants. Please email EmergingAdult@dcda.us with your request.

Can I attend the workshop as a single individual from my community?

Since RJ programs are collaborative in nature preference for the free registration to attend the workshop will be given to interagency teams over single institution teams or individuals.

We are a 21-23 CJC RJ grant recipient and our partners are unable to attend the conference.

Since RJ programs are collaborative in nature, preference for free registrations will be given to interagency teams over single institution teams.

One or multiple team members cannot attend the entire event, they either need to arrive late or depart early. Can we still register?

Since this workshop is covered by grant funds, we are asking that all participants attend the entire event. Priority selection for the free registration will be given to teams that can fully participate.

The flyer says that this is a no or very low-cost event to participate in. What is or is not covered?

Covered workshop expenses include:
• Workshop Registration
• Lodging (single occupancy rooms) at the Riverhouse Hotel & Convention Center for 2 nights. (Monday, April 15 through Wednesday, April 17, 2024)
• Workshop meals (D – 4/15, BLD – 4/16 & BL – 4/17)
• Mileage (0.655/mile) to and from your home city to Bend for up to two (2) vehicles per team.

• Hotel Incidentals
• Meals and incidentals incurred driving to and from Bend

One of my team members who applied to attend is no longer available, can we swap in someone else?

Please contact the event coordinator at EmergingAdult@dcda.us for your request to be considered.

Should I book or reserve my room at the hotel?

No. Workshop attendees should NOT book their hotel room. The event coordinator will be handling all hotel lodging reservations.

All approved attendees will be provided with a single occupancy room.

Can we come in or stay longer at the hotel at our own expense?

Yes. Our group rate of $159 + tax and fees will be honored to attendees for three days prior and three days post the event.

When will I be notified if my application to attend has been accepted?

Complete three (3) or four (4) person teams will be notified of acceptance within two weeks of applying. Partial teams or individual applicants will be notified of the opportunity to attend the workshop by no later than March 15, 2024.
